Prevention of perinatal Group B Streptococcal disease
Group B Streptococcus (GBS), or S. agalactiae, is a leading cause of infection in industrialized countries. While it is commonly asymptomatic in adults, it can lead to serious health issues in newborns including sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. GBS is found in the rectum or vagina of approximately 25% of pregnant women, putting their newborns at risk of contracting the disease during childbirth. According to authorities including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)1, the most effective means of preventing this is universal GBS screening of all pregnant women at 35-37 weeks gestation and intrapartum administration of antibiotics for women who test positive. Pregnant women who have GBS detected in their urine at any time in their pregnancy should also receive antibiotics during labor. Perinatal GBS screening helps:
- Reduce the number of newborn GBS infections by avoiding maternal transmission during labor
- Adjust the antibiotic prophylaxis depending on the woman’s colonization status
- Control the level of antibiotic resistance among GBS
- Provide healthcare cost-effectiveness thanks to lower infection rates
